Growth of the North Carlton village was fueled by a 19th Century land boom serviced through its cable tram and Inner Circle Railway interchange – attested to by today's landmark Railway Hotel.

Architecturally, the small streetscape still contains an interesting mix of late victorian and Federation buildings, housing a wide cross-section of businesses.
